In response to the September 11 attacks, Operation Enduring Freedom was launched in Afghanistan. Less than two years later, Operation Iraqi Freedom began in Iraq. With these conflicts still in progress, the museum gives visitors a glimpse into the life of airmen serving in Southwest Asia. Be sure to explore the Warrior Airmen exhibit located in the Cold War Gallery which depicts airmen who work on the ground and in the sky. Walk around the MH-53. Throughout its life, this helicopter performed many missions. It flew on the 1970 Son Tay Raid during the Vietnam War. Over the years, it remained in continual use, and it was significantly upgraded. It flew its last mission in Iraq on March 28, 2008. From there the MH-53 was brought to the museum for display. If you want to know what each part of the helicopter does, look at the touch screens located beside the aircraft. Also immerse yourself in the video about the battle at Takur Ghar and learn how two USAF airmen gave their lives while fighting against terrorists in the mountains of Afghanistan. This exhibit also covers Explosive Ordnance Disposal, or EOD, and air operations over the skies of Iraq and Afghanistan. The Warrior Airmen exhibit is portraying history as it happens.
