Cadet Heidi Beemer attempts to build a microbial fuel cell capable of detecting metabolic reactions from microorganisms. This research later lead into the creation of LAMBDA (Life Analysis and Metabolic Biological Detection Apparatus) that was fielded by Crew 99 at the Mars Desert Research Station. This initial study was conducted as a part of NASA Space Exploration Academy in August 2010 at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif. (Courtesy of Lt. Heidi Beemer)
