Medically retired Cpl. Joshua D. Carpenter, former infantryman with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, received his Purple Heart Medal, Sept. 28, 2013, almost ten years after he was injured in Fallujah, Iraq. The Duncanville, Texas, native suffered from a detached retina after he was hit by the blast from a fragmentation grenade while conducting a security patrol with his squad to intercept enemy snipers.
