Medically retired Cpl. Joshua D. Carpenter was awarded a Purple Heart during a ceremony at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint reserve Base, Sept. 28, 2013 in Fort Worth, Texas. Almost 10 years prior, the former infantry rifleman sustained a severe eye injury from a fragmentation grenade during a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II in Fallujah, Iraq, in April 2004.Carpenter credits finally receiving his award to his former squad leader, Master Sgt. Josue Magana, who was present to pin the award onto Carpenter.
