The white plume created from this small unguided rocket, commonly known as “Smokey Sam,” gave Weapon and Tactics Instructor course students a visualization of a missile strike in a training exercise at the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range, Ariz., on Oct. 3. The purpose of the Smokey Sam rocket is to provide WTI pilots and aircrew students with defensive maneuver tactics and increase the survivability of aircraft and crew members while deployed to a combat zone.
