U.S. Army Spc. William Marsh, from Kansas City, Mo., who serves as a mortarman, loads a high explosive mortar shell into a M224 60mm mortar being held by Sgt. John Keller, from Moorhead, Minn., who serves as a mortarman, while Spc. Jacob Connolly, of Berlin, N.H., who serves as a fire support specialist, scans the impact area on Forward Operating Base Torkham, Sept. 27, 2013. All three soldiers serve with, Company C, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. The soldiers were conducting live fire training to ensure that their skills remain sharp. Their target was a deserted mountainside outside their base. Before each mortar shell was fired, the soldiers scanned the area to make sure that no living creature was nearby. The soldiers had to wait while a local shepherd and his flock of sheep, who wandered into the target area, before the training began. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Jerry Saslav, 129th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment/RELEASED)
