Rct. Omar Mond, Platoon 1084, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, walks through a culvert Oct. 24, 2013, during the bayonet assault course portion of the Crucible at the combat training area on Parris Island, S.C. Mond, an 18-year-old native of Mansfield, Mass., used bayonet techniques he learned earlier in training to complete the course. Drill instructors constantly tested recruits on their teamwork, endurance and dedication throughout the 54-hour culminating event. Bravo Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 1, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
