Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Erik Littlefield, Platoon 1082, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, guides other recruits through an obstacle course Oct. 24, 2013, during the Crucible at the combat training area on Parris Island, S.C. The Crucible was first implemented into recruit training in 1996 as a way to evaluate each recruit's mental, moral and physical development in order to validate their transformation into United States Marines. Littlefield, an 18-year-old native of Delray Beach, Fla., is scheduled to graduate Nov. 1, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
