The four flew from Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in an MV-22B Osprey, which landed aboard a JMSDF ship for the first time while in the Asia-Pacific region. Wissler is the commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, Iwasaki is the chief of joint staff for the Japan Self-Defense Forces, Bansho is the commanding general of the Western Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces, and Eldridge is the deputy assistant chief of staff, G-7, government and external affairs, Marine Corps Installations Pacific. The Osprey is assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force currently assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
