Gunnery Sgt. Norman Catacata, senior drill instructor for Platoon 3088, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, presents Pfc. Patrick Connelly II, his Eagle, Globe and Anchor, and calls him Marine for the first time Nov. 16, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. It took more than 12 weeks of mentally and physically demanding training for the recruits to earn the coveted title. Catacata, 33, from San Leandro, Calif., is one of a handful of drill instructors responsible for molding young men into Marines. Connelly, 24, from Petersburg, Va., is scheduled to graduate Nov. 22, 2013. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
