The Michigan National Guard works with the Latvian Armed Forces under the auspices of the State Partnership Program, which links a state's National Guard with the armed forces of a partner country to assist the partner nation with transitioning their armed forces training standards to meet North Atlantic Treaty Organization requirements. Michigan has been working with Latvia since 1994 and they have trained and served in combat in Afghanistan with each other since being matched as partner nations.
