Wing Commander Richard Beaton (left), Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Ohakea, bids farewell to United States Air Force Lt. Col. Phillip Shea, 517th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron commander, as he prepares to depart the RNZAF base in New Zealand Nov. 25. More than 70 U.S. airmen from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, deployed to the 517th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron to support Exercise Kiwi Flag. Shea and nearly 45 airmen from JBER, will board their home-station-bound C-17 Globemaster III after clearing customs. Kiwi Flag is a multilateral RNZAF-sponsored tactical airlift exercise conducted in New Zealand. The Royal Australian Air Force, Republic of Singapore Air Force and the French Armed Forces of New Caledonia also participated. Shea is assigned as the 517th Airlift Squadron director of operations at JBER. He hails from Winthrop Harbor, Ill. Kiwi Flag personnel also provided cargo and passenger airlift including tactical air drops to Exercise Southern Katipo, New Zealand Defence Force's largest-ever multilateral joint force amphibious exercise with eight other nations participating.
