Pfc. Jerry Bates III stands with his family after graduating recruit training on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., on Dec. 20, 2013. Bates reported to recruit training Sept. 23 to become the fourth generation in his family to bear the title Marine. His father, Sgt. Maj. Jerry Bates II, is currently the base sergeant major for Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan.
