Sgt. Maj. Jerry Bates II presents his son, Rct. Jerry Bates III, with his Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem during a ceremony Dec. 14, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Bates reported to Parris Island for training with Platoon 1097, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, on Sept. 23, 2013 to earn the title and become a fourth-generation Marine. The Crucible, during which recruits face leadership and teamwork challenges, sleep deprivation and exhausting physical demands, ends at the Iwo Jima flag raising statue, where drill instructors present their recruits with Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblems and call them Marines for the first time.
