Rct. Curran Johnson, Platoon 2094, Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, crosses a small moat in a combat training course Oct. 22, 2013, as part of Basic Warrior Training on Parris Island, S.C. To make the experience more realistic, instructors use smoke grenades to disorient the recruits. Held during the ninth week, Basic Warrior Training introduces recruits to basic field skills all Marines must know. Johnson, an 18-year-old native of Turnersville, N.J., is scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Pfc. Vaniah Temple)
