    Sgt. Sylvia Washington, a drill instructor for November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, instructs her recruits to stay close to the ground on a combat training course Oct. 22, 2013, as part of Basic Warrior Training on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits worked in teams of two or four to maneuver over and under various obstacles such as concertina wire, walls and small moats while wearing combat equipment. Held during the ninth week, Basic Warrior Training introduces recruits to basic field skills all Marines must know. The basic combat training recruits receive while on Parris Island will be broadened after boot camp at advanced training in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Washington is a 26-year-old native of Manteca, Calif. November Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
