General Louis H. Wilson (left), Commandant of the Marine Corps, promotes Vincente “Ben” T. Blaz to the rank of brigadier general in 1977, as Blaz’ wife, Ann, helps to pin on his new rank insignia. Blaz was the first Chamorro, or native of the Marianas Islands, from Guam to achieve the rank of brigadier general. Wilson earned the Medal of Honor for heroism in combat during the liberation of Guam in World War II, where Blaz, who lived through the Japanese invasion and occupation, was born. (Courtesy photo)
