13-year-old Vincente “Ben” T. Blaz poses for a photo at the family farm after the liberation of Guam from Japanese occupation during World War II. Blaz, who later became a brigadier general in the Marine Corps, is holding a Marine pith helmet given to him by Marines whom he spent time with after the war. It was his treasured possession, his source of pride, and symbolized his desire to become a Marine, according to family members. Throughout the years after he retired from the Marine Corps, Blaz would wear one of these helmets when he worked outdoors. (Courtesy photo)
