Rct. Cheyenne Dawson, Platoon 4002, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, provides security for her teammates while they complete an obstacle during the Crucible on Jan. 17, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The Crucible is a 54-hour event during which recruits are tested mentally, physically and morally so they prove to their drill instructors that they have been imbued with the Marine Corps’ core values of honor, courage and commitment. Dawson, an 18-year-old Cottonwood, Ariz., native, is scheduled to graduate Jan. 24, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
