Staff Sgt. Beatriz Bautista, a drill instructor for Platoon 4002, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, speaks with her recruits about the importance of safety during the Crucible on Jan. 17, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Bautista, a 26-year-old Arlington, Va., native, and her fellow drill instructors acted less like disciplinarians and more like mentors during the Crucible, as the 54-hour assessment was the young women’s last chance to prove they had transitioned from a recruit mindset to that of a U.S. Marine and should be treated as such. November Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 24, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
