Colonel Baumgarten, fifth from left, commanding officer, 1st Marine Regiment, Major Gen. Lawrence Nicholson, sixth from left, commanding general, 1st Marine Division, and former commanding officers of the regiment stood together as the battalions marched by to salute them during the regiment’s 100-year anniversary ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., Jan. 24, 2014. The regiment has spanned a century and has been involved in nearly every major engagement from World War II and Vietnam to more recent operations, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The regiment’s historic lineage includes 19 Medal of Honor recipients.
