Ten officer candidates enrolled in the Virginia Guard’s Officer Candidate School receive their commissions and graduated from OCS Oct. 26, 2013, at Fort Pickett’s 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute in front of family, friends and Virginia Army National Guard senior leaders. The candidates heard remarks from Col. Douglas R. Messner, 183rd RTI commander, and Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr., the adjutant general of Virginia, before taking their oath of office, affixing their new rank and receiving their first salute as lieutenants from a member of the enlisted ranks. The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett-based 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute has been awarded a certificate of accreditation for an “Institute of Excellence” status by U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command according to a letter dated Jan. 23, 2014, from the TRADOC commanding general. The schoolhouse underwent a thorough accreditation process that evaluated both the RTI facility and the staff, and earned an overall score of 98 percent, marking it as one of the best U.S. Army learning centers in the nation. The RTI consists of the RTI Headquarters and three battalions. First Battalion conducts infantry training, including the infantryman military occupational specialty qualification course, Light Leaders Course and rappel master, while 2nd Battalion conducts the 88M Motor Transport Operator Course. Third battalion includes both Officer Candidate School and Warrant Officer Candidate School and also trains soldiers as military police officers. (Photo by Staff Sgt. Terra C.
