The matrons of honor, Sandra Brashear and Joy Harris, along with the ship's sponsor, Lauren Brashear, launch the Military Sealift Command auxiliary dry cargo carrier USNS Carl Brashear during the christening and launch ceremony at General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard. The Brashear honors boatswain's mate (master diver) Master Chief Petty Officer Carl M. Brashear, one of the first black deep-sea divers and master divers and the first U.S. Navy diver to be restored to full active duty as an amputee.
