Corpsmen talk before the Independent Duty Corpsman Association 70th birthday celebration March 27 at the Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster. In 1944, the U.S. Navy saw a need for experienced and educated corpsmen capable of providing aid without the support of a medical officer. Corpsmen must attend a yearlong course before being certified as the sole medical care providers for where they are stationed. The mission of the IDCA is to strengthen the skills and knowledge of all IDCs through the sustainment of superior health care delivery in support of mission accomplishment. The sailors are with various units on Okinawa.
