Col. Mounkaila Sofiani, commander of Niger Army’s Regional 5th Zone in Diffa, Niger, discusses the challenges that face his troops while speaking with reporters in his office March 6, 2014. He hosted a portion of Exercise Flintlock 2014 for training of more than 150 troops from Niger, Nigeria and Chad. Flintlock exercises began in 2005 and have grown to become a global endeavor spanning multiple countries, languages and cultures. Flintlock is an African planned, coordinated and executed multi-lateral exercise that seeks to further the training and counterterrorism capabilities and proficiencies of participating nations across the Trans-Sahara region, while fostering collaborative communication and coordination skills.
