Rct. Shawn Playford, Platoon 1045, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, directs another recruit toward the mess hall’s salad bar March 27, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Playford, a 21-year-old from Albany, N.Y., and his fellow recruits spent their first week on the island learning and adjusting to the standards of Marine boot camp. This first week, known as receiving week, prepares recruits for the official training curriculum so they may be successful. Bravo Company is scheduled to graduate June 20, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
