Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Staff Sgt. Daniel Weiss Jr., a drill instructor for Platoon 1029, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, speaks with his new Marine, Pvt. Neri Lovato III, on April 26, 2014. This was the first time the young men could speak casually with their drill instructors, for they were now Marines and could be treated as such. Weiss, 30, is from Hertford, N.C. Lovato, a 21-year-old from Deland, Fla., graduated with Platoon 1029 on May 2, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
