Steven Spencer get to know each other May 5 before the Balikatan Medical Symposium in Legazpi City, Albay Province, Philippines. Speakers at the symposium spoke on topics such as common sicknesses in the region to raise the level of awareness, understanding, and methods for mitigation and prevention of the new and emerging threats. The symposium was part of Exercise Balikatan, an annual bilateral training exercise and humanitarian assistance engagement between members of the Philippine and U.S. armed forces that focuses on strengthening the bond between the long standing allies. Avancena is the Armed Forces of the Philippines surgeon general, Salceda is the governor of the Albay Province, and Spencer is a pediatric infectious disease specialist with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
