Steward Lloyd McLaughlin, RFA Cardigan Bay, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, U.K. Royal Navy, gives commands to the gunner of a 30 mm cannon during an escalation of force exercise with U.S. Army AH-64 Apaches and the U.S. Navy's USS Thunderbolt on June 9, 2014, somewhere in the Arabian Gulf. The Apache pilots trained on deck landings and functioned as scouts for the Cardigan Bay during Exercise Spartan Kopis, an exchange between the Cardigan Bay and both the Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache elements of the 42nd CAB, New York Army National Guard. Spartan Kopis was the first time American Apaches worked with a Royal Navy ship to function as its eyes and ears during the escalation of force exercise. (N.Y. Army National Guard photo by Sgt.
