ALI BASE, Iraq -- The southern third of Iraqi skies are controlled by a small group of Airmen assigned to the 407th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron Area Control Center. The 50,000 square miles of coverage is handled using a mobile radar unit designed for high mobility and a four month useful life. The unit has been in operation more than 3 years now.
Airman 1st Class Tiffany Macedo is one of the air traffic controllers assigned to the control center. Airman Macedo is monitoring radio traffic, keeping an eye on the radar screen in front of her and updating flight progress strips each time she has contact with one of the aircraft she's tracking.
