Master Sgt. Mark Dornak, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion operations chief and native of College Station, Texas, instructs his Marines on the proper way to connect themselves when using Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction system during Integrated Training Exercise 4-14 June 10, 2014. The SPIE system was often practiced and sometimes used during the Vietnam era. The procedure became less commonly used after the war but is again becoming a skill for reconnaissance Marines to use. The system was developed as a means to quickly insert or extract a recon patrol from an area that would be very difficult for a helicopter to land. ITX employs assets from ground, air and logistics combat elements to demonstrate the ability to deploy rapidly and build up significant combat power necessary to form a MAGTF.
