Marines with Company C, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion are lifted into the air by a CH-46E helicopter as they participate in a Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction system exercise during Integrated Training Exercise 4-14 June 10, 2014. The SPIE system was often practiced and sometimes used during the Vietnam era. The procedure became less commonly used after the war but is again becoming a skill for reconnaissance Marines to use. The system was developed as a means to quickly insert or extract a recon patrol from an area that would be very difficult for a helicopter to land. ITX employs assets from ground, air and logistics combat elements to demonstrate the ability to deploy rapidly and build up significant combat power necessary to form a MAGTF.
