Staff Sgt. Shane Newell from the 380th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron uses a motor grader to spread fill material used to build up and stabilize the sub-base prior to placing base-course gravel Sept. 16. The grader is a precision piece of equipment that can level dirt to within a tenth of an inch. The ECES team construct areas such as this in preparation for new builds such as the maintenance pad which will be used by soldiers from the 5-52 Air Defense Artillery Battalion, Fort Bliss, Texas. The ECES, like many other Air Force units have contributed time and effort in support of the first Army Patriot mission to be incorporated into the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing's mission in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom and Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. Newell is deployed from the 735th CES Ramstein Air Base, Germany. His hometown is Orlando, Fla.
