Lt. Col. Darren Werner, commander of the 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division - Baghdad, addresses many platoon leaders and sergeants after an awards presentation, Jan. 7, at Forward Operating Base Falcon in southern Baghdad's Rashid District. Col. Ted Martin, a native of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and commander of the 1st "Raider" Brigade, presented the "Early Bird" Award to Werner and the battalion's top enlisted leader, Command Sgt. Maj. Ronny Martinez, who calls Salinas, Calif., his home, for being the first unit to meet the brigade's retention requirements for the fiscal year. Werner hails from Mayville, Mich.
