Marines and local community members pay respects June 23 to Col. Kermit Shelly and those who died during the Battle of Okinawa on Hamahiga Island. The contributions Shelly and his Marines made to Hamahiga Island were so appreciated by community members that a memorial was constructed for him following his death. Shelly was the commanding officer of 3rd Force Service Regiment. The Marines are with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl.
