A Soldier from the Ohio National Guard and Maj. Gen. Deborah Ashenhurst, adjutant general, Ohio National Guard, test chlorine levels in water delivered to Holland, Ohio, from other local communities not impacted by the harmful algae bloom that contaminated the Greater Toledo Area public water system, Aug. 3, 2014. Ohio Gov. John Kasich declared a state of emergency Aug. 2, 2014, after a harmful algae bloom in Lake Erie contaminated the area’s public water system. Hundreds of gallons of water, delivered by fire trucks from surrounding communities, is transferred from the fire trucks into large bladders before being passed through several smaller bladders used for filtering followed by chlorine tests to ensure sanitary water is available for those in need. Members of the Ohio Army and Air National Guard have been activated to stand up water distribution sites for those communities impacted until the state of emergency is lifted.
