Maj. Gen. Leslie Purser pins one of four medals to the chest of Paul R. Hallman Sr., World War II Army-Air Force veteran and former P.O.W., during a ceremony in his honor. The ceremony held at the 108th Training Command (IET) Headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 16, 2014, was one day shy of the 70th anniversary of Hallman’s 43rd combat flight during World War II. On that flight, Hallman, who served as an engineer on a B24J “Liberator”, and his crew were shot down while performing a bombing mission over a Ploesti, Romania oil Refinery. Hallman and several other survivors of the flight were captured by German forces and held in Romania for several months until they were liberated by the Russian Army and returned to American forces later that year.
