Then 1st Lt. James "Jimmy" Ryan, left, poses with Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe during their deployment to Forward Operating Base McKenzie in Samarra, Iraq. Cashe was injured Oct. 17, 2005, when an IED detonated next to his vehicle. Drenched in fuel, Cashe continued to pull his Soldiers from the burning vehicle, suffering burns to more than 80 percent of his body. He later died of his injuries, Nov. 8, 2005.
