Wendy Dickerson of Raleigh, N.C., places a medal around the neck of a finishing runner at the 2014 Navy-Air Force 5-Miler/Half-Marathon, which began at the foot of the Washington Monument in the nation’s capital. Dickerson was one of more than 400 people who volunteered at the annual event, a production of the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB), which helps celebrate the birthdays of the Air Force (Sept. 18) and the Navy (Oct. 13). “I love it.
