U.S. Sailors stand watch on the bridge while Tomahawk cruise missiles are launched aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) in the Persian Gulf Sept. 23, 2014. The Philippine Sea deployed as part of Carrier Strike Group 2 to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. President Barack Obama authorized humanitarian aid deliveries to Iraq as well as targeted airstrikes to protect U.S. personnel from extremists known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
