Paratroopers reenact Waal River crossing in Netherlands

Paratroopers assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division help World War II veteran James “Maggie” Megellas into an assault boat, Sept. 21, 2014, in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Megellas, the most decorated officer in the history of the 82nd Abn. Div., joined the Paratroopers during a modern-day reenactment of the crossing of the Waal River that took place during Operation Market Garden in World War II. Megellas parachuted into the Netherlands during the 1944 operation and crossed the river with his troops while under heavy machine gunfire. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Mary S. Katzenberger)
