U.S. Air Force Maj. William "Brian" Downs was born January 30, 1965. He graduated from Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis, Mo., in 1983. Following graduation, Downs attended Grove City College in Pa., and earned his Air Force commission in 1988. Downs graduated Undergraduate Pilot Training in 1989 and was assigned to the 668th Bomb Squadron, Griffiss Air Force Base, where he became an Instructor Pilot in the B-52. Downs joined the 9th Special Operations Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla., in 1992 and became an MC-130P Evaluator Pilot. In 1997, and again after the September 11 attacks, he was assigned to the 6th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field as a Combat Aviation Advisor. Downs served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Provide Comfort II and III, Uphold Democracy, Enduring Freedom (Philippines), and Iraqi Freedom. He was on his 90th mission in Iraq when on May 30, 2005, the Comp Air 7 aircraft he and three other Special Operations personnel and one Iraqi Air Force member were flying in, crashed in east central Iraq.
