Soldiers assigned to 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, based out of Fort Bliss, Texas, stand in formation during their color casing ceremony at Roberts International Airport, located outside, Monrovia, Liberia, Feb. 25. The ceremony marked the 2-501st’s successful completion of their mission in support of Operation United Assistance where they were deployed as Task Force Iron Knights. More than 290 aircraft maintainers, mechanics, cooks, operations and communication specialists, and aircrew members deployed from Fort Bliss and hit the ground running, starting operations within 48 hours of landing in Liberia, said Lt. Col. Whitney Gardner, the task force commander. Operation United Assistance is a Department of Defense operation in Liberia to provide logistics, medical training and engineering support to U.S. Agency for International Development-led efforts to contain the Ebola virus outbreak in western Africa.
