The Mameluke sword of 2nd Lt. Paul W. Smithson, a former Marine with 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, who was killed in combat during a patrol Nov. 20, 1968, during the Vietnam War, sits on display before being presented to the Smithson’s family at the Officers Club aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., March 1, 2015. The sword was found by Staff Sgt. Jason Mabe, a motor transport maintenance chief with 2nd Radio Battalion, lying against a fence while he was on duty in 2013. The sword was presented back to Smithson’s family by Mabe and the command of 2nd Radio Battalion after Mabe successfully identified the original owner and located the family.
