Petty Officer 3rd Class Melissa Pate, quartermaster, uses a compass to plot the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan's movement on a navigation chart. Quartermasters work for the ship's navigator to help plan and record the ship's movement. Despite the technological advances of GPS systems, QMs are required to use charts and measurements to update the ship's location. Ronald Reagan is moored pier-side in Singapore for a scheduled port visit.
