Lance Cpl. Michael Jeng poses for a photo April 19 after making it through the “pit-and-pond” obstacle during the endurance course at Jungle Warfare Training Center, Okinawa, Japan. During the pit-and-pond, Marines had to low crawl through trenches in knee-high swamp water, avoiding barbed and Concertina wire strewn overhead. JWTC is the only facility of its kind in the Department of Defense, spanning 20,000 acres of unforgiving Okinawan wilderness. The facility was used initially to train Marines before they deployed during the Vietnam War. Jeng is a Pleasanton, Calif. Native and rifleman with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The battalion is attached to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force as part of the unit deployment program. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt.
