Sergeant Major Marcus A. Chestnut and Lt. Col. Eric J. Dougherty salute the USS Peary Gun Memorial during a service commemorating the 73rd Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea May 8 at the USS Peary Gun Memorial, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The Battle of the Coral Sea was a series of naval engagements, between the U.S. and Australia against Japan, which occurred May 4 to May 8, 1942 on the northeast coast of Australia. Beyond purely military training, community engagements in the Northern Territory between the Marines and the local community add depth to our relationship with Australia. Chestnut is the sergeant major of 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin. Dougherty is the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, MRF-D.
