Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, one of the settings for his New York Times bestseller 'The Kite Runner.' The story gets its name from a kite flying competition played by the main character, Amir, and his friend Hassan with other children in Afghanistan. The kites' lines are razor sharp and covered with shards of glass to help cut the other kite flyers' lines. The last remaining kite is much sought-after, and various "kite runners" chase after it as a trophy.
