Sgt. Cody Leifheit, a Marine recruiter in Lewiston, Idaho, speaks with enlistee Luke Ellsworth while departing his recruiting office June 10, 2015. Leifheit, a 28-year-old infantry Marine from Ferndale, Washington, responded to a 19-year-old man hanging himself from a tree outside his house June 7. Without hesitation, Leifheit climbed up the tree 25 feet and took hold of the man, who wasn’t breathing and lacked a pulse. Leifheit worked to keep him alive until first responders arrived, continuously performing chest compressions as the man faded in and out. Despite spending 48 hours in a coma, the man survived.
