The Pakistan-SEATO Cholera Research Laboratory was established at Dacca in 1960. The aim of the laboratory is to develop a program to control and eventually eradicate cholera. The United Kingdom, Australia and the United States (through AID) have provided funds, equipment, and technical and administrative personnel. The basic research program is directed by American an Pakistani scientists. Over 400 Pakistanis have been recruited, trained and employed at the Cholera Research Laboratory in research, field and clinical activities. In addition to research aimed at developing an effective cholera vaccine and improving therapy and epidemiology, the lab also teaches methods of cholera control and treatment to health personnel from other regions which may be susceptible to cholera epidemics.
